Managing all your social media accounts

There’s so many social media platforms out there now, that we feel we should be on every one in case we’re missing out. For small businesses, that might not be necessary. Depending on your industry and target market, some social networks may be less appropriate, and generate less interest.

The Problem with SEO Jargon

As a web designer, SEO and all-round Google Geek, I live in a world of jargon. To me, it’s just my native language, but to clients and non-geeks it’s a completely foreign language. It’s the same in many other industries too, such as insurance, medicine and marketing. So why is this a problem?

Link earning – a new age of link building

Traditionally, link building has been a major part of any SEO campaign. The more links you have, the better you’ll rank in the search results. And sadly, that was the case for many years. Many SEO companies offered link building packages, and they no doubt still do today, but in order to keep clients happy the emphasis had been more on quantity than quality [I’m speaking from experience here, but I know there are some great SEO companies out there too]. As an SEO company it was a difficult position to be in. Building links in a natural, organic way is hard work and time consuming, something that some clients may not appreciate. Although I see clients becoming more aware of SEO techniques, I think it’s really up to the SEO company to educate clients as much as possible and just be open and upfront about what’s involved.

Video marketing

Ok, so technically, we don’t directly provide video marketing at Skittish. We do, however, know some great videographers who can help us out. We also promote video to our clients to help build their online presence and convert more traffic into sales. Video can be used in pretty much any industry, even the mundane ones!

Responsive Web Design – a non techie overview

Responsive Web Design

At Skittish, we encourage clients to opt for a responsive website. But what do we mean by this? Well, in layman’s terms it’s a site with a fluid layout which responds and changes depending on the width of the screen and the device that’s displaying it. So the width of the content fits the width of the device and eliminates the need to continually zoom in when using small screens.

Creating Great Content

Link building has long been seen as the holy grail of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Build links and lots of them and you’ll see your site go from nowhere to number 1 in Google’s search results. While that was true in a lot of cases, it’s not that simple any more. You see, building lots of links is easy to do if you go to the right places (link farms, directories, etc), but this is not a long term strategy. This is gaming the system, deliberately attempting to manipulate the search results. It has no benefit to your website visitors either and could get your site banned.
