Google Tag Manager Introduction

Heard people mention “Google Tag Manager” or “GTM” and weren’t sure what they were talking about? We’ve got you covered in this introduction to this amazing (in our opinion) tool:

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool from Google that allows you to manage and deploy marketing tags (snippets of code) on your website or mobile app without needing to modify the source code directly. This makes it a very flexible tool for marketers, enabling them to track user interactions and website performance without involving a developer every time a tag needs to be added or updated.

Key Features of Google Tag Manager:

  1. Tag Management Without Code Changes: GTM allows marketers to add or update tracking tags without editing the website’s code. Once the GTM container is installed, all updates can be made within the GTM interface, reducing the need for developer involvement.
  2. Supports a Wide Range of Tags: GTM can be used to manage a variety of tracking tags, including:
    • Google Analytics
    • Google Ads (formerly AdWords)
    • Facebook Pixel
    • Custom HTML and JavaScript for more advanced tracking It’s not limited to Google tools, and third-party tags can also be deployed.
  3. Triggers and Variables: Tags in GTM are fired based on triggers (conditions). For example, you might fire a tag when a page loads, when someone clicks a button, or when a form is submitted. Variables can be used to define dynamic data, such as tracking specific page URLs, button IDs, or user-defined events.
  4. Preview and Debug Mode: GTM allows you to preview and debug your tags before publishing them live. You can see which tags are firing, and troubleshoot issues using the built-in debugger tool.
  5. Built-in Tag Templates: GTM provides a wide array of built-in templates for common tracking tools like Google Analytics and Google Ads, and many others. This makes the process of setting up tracking tags much easier.
  6. Version Control: GTM keeps track of every change you make by creating a new version of the container whenever an update is published. This version control feature allows you to easily revert to a previous setup if needed.
  7. Event Tracking: One of GTM’s most powerful features is the ability to set up event tracking without needing to modify the site code. Events can be defined by user actions like button clicks, form submissions, video plays, or scrolling behaviour.
  8. User Permissions: GTM allows you to assign roles and permissions to different users. You can control who can edit, publish, or simply view the tags, which is useful for teams with varying responsibilities.
  9. Integration with Google Analytics: GTM integrates seamlessly with Google Analytics, making it easier to set up custom tracking events, enhanced eCommerce, or goal tracking without needing to write additional code. For example, you can set up virtual pageviews, track outbound link clicks, or monitor file downloads via GTM and send this data to your Google Analytics account.

Benefits of Using Google Tag Manager:

  • Faster Deployment: Marketers can update tags without relying on developers.
  • Reduced Errors: Changes can be tested in the preview mode before being published.
  • Improved Efficiency: All tracking tags are managed in one place, reducing the complexity of tracking multiple tags across different platforms.
  • Advanced Tracking: Allows for the setup of more complex event tracking and custom tags, enhancing insights into user behaviour.

Common Use Cases for Google Tag Manager:

  • Tracking website clicks, form submissions, video views, and scroll depth.
  • Setting up conversion tracking for Google Ads and other advertising platforms.
  • Implementing remarketing tags for Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Monitoring user interactions for CRO purposes, like heatmap or scroll tracking.

GTM simplifies website management, especially for marketers who frequently work with multiple analytics and ad platforms. It’s highly scalable for businesses of all sizes and integrates well with many third-party tools.
